About Leher

Leher, literally translated as ‘a wave’, is a social initiative and a platform for gender empowerment in Varanasi, India. Through a series of curated projects, events, and a formal school club network, the project seeks to work with women from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and empower them to become independent, knowledgeable, and informed citizens.

When we think of Leher/wave, we see a wave of change, of overwhelming positive change in the society around us. In that regard, we believe in a multi-pronged approach of fighting the lack of awareness around gender and empowerment. As a part of the project’s efforts and campaigns, the project seeks to ignite change through written educational resources and community engagement efforts. This will be supplemented by peer-led activities, and efforts to make tangible change through monetary donations. A series of immersive Leher campaigns will involve working with civil society organisations, focusing on sharing integral information in fields concerning women’s safety, wellbeing, and equality. This will be done in a queer and LGBTQ friendly manner, and will involve creating discourse with professionals and experts,
